Asphyxiation or asphyxia is the medical term for the severe deficiency of oxygen that comes from abnormal breathing. In simple terms, it's referred to as choking.
According to a report by Injury Facts 2017, choking is the fourth leading cause of unintentional injury death. It was said that out of 5,051 people who have died from choking in the year 2015, 2,848 of them were older than 74.
It is also one of the leading causes of unintentional death among infants.
In the city of Tuguegarao in Cagayan, three children were choked to death by their own mother. Philippine Star reported that Senior Inspector Randy Cabaddu, the police chief of Burgos, held Marilyn Foronda in custody after they discovered the corpses of her children.
The three children were Adam MC Wane, aged 3, Stephen Dane, aged 2, and Shansa Sara Foroda, who was only three-month-old.
It was reported that Foronda brutally strangled them while sleeping in their house in Barangay Caliguian, at the town of Burgos, Isabela. The crime occurred on the evening of Wednesday, March 1.
The children's bodies were discovered by Foronda's mother-in-law when she saw Nisha Foronda, aged 7, walking in a dazed state. Nisha claimed that her mother consecutively strangled her three siblings who were asleep.
Cabaddu also found out that Foronda bruised the knees of her youngest child. When the police arrived on the scene, they were able to see Foronda vacantly staring into a distance. They learned that the husband of the suspect was abroad, where he has been working as a seaman for three months.
Foronda's relatives recounted that she was always alone and has chosen to isolate herself in their house ever since she gave birth to Shansa. They said that she was afflicted with the postpartum syndrome.
Postpartum is a type of depression that is especially common among women who have just given birth. It was reported that between 0.5 to 61% of women will experience the condition after undergoing labor.
