Vice President Leni Robredo sees no need to fear the Supreme Court (SC) over the election protest filed against her by former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos.
In a News To Go interview aired Friday, Robredo said she believes the SC will issue a “fair and square” decision.
“Kailangan natin tumiwala, ito yung institution na parang last bastion of democracy siya. Siya yung magde-decide what is fair and what is not, what is right and what is wrong. Kailangan tiwalain natin yung institusyon,” Robredo said.
“Naniniwala ako na pag na-desisyunan na yung kaso, fair and square, wala kaming kailangan ikatakot,” she said.
Robredo denied cheating allegations against her, saying that she clearly won the mandate of the Filipino people.
Robredo defeated Marcos in the vice presidential race with a slim margin of 263,473 votes.
Robredo also slammed the camp of Marcos for trying to fool the public with its supposed erroneous claims.
Robredo was referring to the claim of Marcos’ camp that there was “massive fraud” in the 2016 national elections after data were seen in at least 13 of 26 secure digital (SD) cards from unused vote counting machines.
Robredo said it was “obviously for media consumption” because Marcos’ spokesperson, Victor Rodriguez, “didn't rise up to the challenge” of her lawyer, Romulo Macalintal.
Macalintal earlier challenged Marcos and Rodriguez to sign a memorandum of agreement that states that if they are unable to prove their claim, Marcos will immediately withdraw his election protest, and Rodriguez will surrender to the SC his license as a lawyer.
“The challenge was for them to meet but they didn’t rise up to the challenge. So, it was all for media na I think it’s unfair to the Filipino people,” Robredo said.
Rodriguez, in a text message to GMA News Online, said he will not fall to the “media stunt” of Macalintal.
“It’s just a media stunt meant to divert attention to the real issue at hand, that Leni Robredo cheated her way to the Vice-Presidency. No, we will not take any part in Macalintal’s comic theatrics,” Rodriguez said.
"Nauunawaan namin ang matinding nerbiyos at kaba na pinagdadaanan ni Macalintal at Robredo ngayong dahan-dahan [nang] naglalabasan ang mga pruweba ng dayaan noong halalan," Rodriguez added.
He vowed to prove before the SC, sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal, that Robredo "cheated her way to the vice presidency." — Kathrina Charmaine Alvarez/RSJ, GMA News
