Trillanes sees Duterte declaring martial law to set up revolutionary government

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV thinks President Rodrigo Duterte wants to declare martial law to pave the way for a revolutionary government.

“Ang aking paniniwala, ang gusto niya mangyari dito is a revolutionary government. Magde-declare siya ng martial law then after that, ipapasara na niya 'yung Congres at Korte Suprema tapos revolutionary government na ang nakatayo,” Trillanes said in a News To Go interview Tuesday.

“Ganun din ang gagawin niya sa media outfits, ipapasara niya. By then, wala nang makakapagreklamo. Iyan ang pinakatatakutan nating scenario,” he added.

Trillanes cited Duterte’s earlier statements that no one can stop him from declaring martial law, even if the Constitution provides that it has to undergo review from both Congress and the Supreme Court (SC).

Duterte said neither Congress nor the SC can stop him from declaring martial law if he deems it necessary because of any threat to the "integrity of the country."

Trillanes said such statements from Duterte should be taken seriously.

“Unang una, Presidente siya, kailangan lahat ng lumalabas sa bibig niya, seseryosohin natin at seryoso ito,” Trillanes said.

“Kaya mas maganda nang naghahanda tayo dahil kung hindi tayo maghahanda, sasabihin natin nagbibiro ‘yan tapos biglang mag-declare, ‘di mabibigla tayong lahat at wala na tayong magagawa by then,” he said.

Most of Duterte’s allies have downplayed his statements on martial law, saying he will not impose martial law without the justifications under the Constitution.
