Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez on Tuesday said the House of Representatives will investigate reports of the US government's supposed plan to oust President Rodrigo Duterte.
In a radio dzBB interview, Alvarez said they will try to determine the source of a supposed blueprint that former US Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg had written about the plan to remove Duterte from office.
"Hindi po magandang balita iyan at kailangan alamin natin ang puno't dulo niyan. Dahil kung iyan ay may katotohanan, hindi po maganda iyan dahil pakikialam iyan ng ibang bansa sa soberinidad ng isang malayang bansa," said Alvarez.
A report about Goldberg's supposed oust blueprint came out in a daily broadsheet on Tuesday.
"Balak kong paimbestigahan iyan sa Kongreso pagbalik natin ngayong Enero. At kailangan talaga nating alamin iyan. Mahirap palampasin ang mga ganyang usapan dahil alam naman nating lahat na napakalaki po ng mandato ng ating Pangulo magmula sa sambayanan," he added.
The House held its last plenary session for the year on December 16 before going into a holiday break. Sessions will resume on January 16.
Alvarez said it would be unwise for the US government to plot any oust move against Duterte, especially since the President, he said, continues to enjoy high approval ratings based on recent surveys.
"Even iyong mga recent surveys, mataas pa rin ang rating ng ating Pangulo. At kung ganyan nga ang binabalak ng bansang Amerika ay hindi po maganda iyan," he said.
In October, Alvarez personally handed to Goldberg an award from congressmen for "his efforts in further enriching ties between the US and the Philippines."
Duterte hurled tirades against Goldberg after the latter criticized the President’s joke during the May election campaign about the rape and murder of Australian missionary Jacqueline Hamill in 1989.
Duterte even called Goldberg “bakla” (gay) and “son of a b*tch” during a meeting with soldiers in Davao City last August.
Goldberg assumed his post as US envoy on Dec. 2, 2013 and ended it last October.
He was replaced by US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim. —Mark Merueñas/KG, GMA News
