Mayor Rolando Espinosa of Albuera, Leyte was shot dead inside his jail cell early morning on Saturday, Albuera PNP chief Jovie Espenido confirmed.
Espinosa was detained at the Baybay City Provinical Jail.
In an interview with radio DZMM, Espenido said the former mayor was killed while being served a search warrant by CIDG Region 8.
According to a spot report, Espinosa was killed at around 4 a.m. along with inmate Raul Yap.
Espinosa was among the politicians linked by President Rodrigo Duterte to the illegal drug trade.
He was arrested in October for illegal drug possession. After several days, his son Kerwin was nabbed in Abu Dhabi.
