Rumors are circulating in social media that Senator Miriam Santiago might drop her candidacy for Presidency in the coming May 2016 election to give way to Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte whom she allegedly supports.
Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago and Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte are good friends and both are known having really strict governance. It seems that Miriam’s popularity is already on the decline lately, She might really sacrifice her desire to become President and just support Mayor Rodrigo Duterte instead.
The two were the second pair up for a confrontation during the first round of the debate, which was organized by GMA-7 and the Philippine Daily Inquirer last Sunday, February 21 in Cagayan de Oro City.
Santiago was first asked by the hosts about her fitness to run for president given her health condition. After Santiago answered, Duterte was asked to give his reaction.
But instead of rebutting Santiago, Duterte came to her defense.
“I will not debate with Ma’am Miriam. She’s telling you the truth. I do not see Miriam passing away in the next 20 years,” he said to cheers from members of the audience.
Santiago then ended her speech with a tirade against corrupt officials that made an exception of one politician.
“Graft and corruption is endemic and everybody speaks out but nobody has done much except Mayor Rody Duterte,” she said to cheers.
According to some supporters of Mayor Duterte, they are already sure that Miriam Santiago is going to give her support to Duterte since they are really good friends and it seems that Miriam is already losing so she might just persuade her supporters to vote for duterte instead.
“We know that Miriam is already not that popular and the best strategy is to pass her supporters to Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and we believe that she is going to do this because she has high regard to Duterte, one of the supporters of Mayor Duterte said to our source.
Its very evident that there is mutual admiration between the two presidentiables and it will perhaps be Santiago’s pleasure to drop her candidacy and support the Davao city mayor in the coming elections
